The lyre, derived from the Greek term "λύρα" and the Latin "lyra," is an intriguing stringed musical instrument classified within the lute family according to the Hornbostel–Sachs system. Organologically, the lyre is categorized as a yoke lute, characterized by its strings being connected to a yoke that aligns with the sound table, coupled with two arms and a crossbar.
Dating back to ancient history, the lyre has been a significant instrument across various cultures encircling the Mediterranean Sea. The earliest verifiable examples of the lyre have been unearthed at archaeological sites in Mesopotamia, dating to around 2700 BCE. The oldest forms of lyres from the Fertile Crescent, known as eastern lyres, are particularly noted for their distinctive flat bases. Such instruments have been discovered across multiple archaeological sites in regions including Egypt, Syria, Anatolia, and the Levant.
Conversely, the round lyre, or Western lyre, also has roots in Syria and Anatolia but experienced a decline in prevalence around 1750 BCE. This variation re-emerged in ancient Greece between 1700 and 1400 BCE before eventually proliferating throughout the Roman Empire. It served as a precursor to European variants such as the Germanic lyre or rotte, which found usage in north-western Europe from pre-Christian until medieval periods.
